I’ve not played a Mario game in ages, so Beach Island Deluxe was a welcome blast of fresh coastal air. Its bright, colourful environment, non-linear level design, and even the move set of its protagonist are all reminiscent of the plumber’s 3D adventures. Spoiler: it isn’t as good, of course, but it does capture some of the Nintendo magic, albeit with a protagonist from the Cool Spot school of mascot design.
