The Vuelta a España could be a second race of firsts in as many months for Ineos Grenadiers rider Ethan Hayter. One is already guaranteed, as he is set to make his Grand Tour debut. The others, less so but looking increasingly likely.
After winning the Tour of Poland, the first WorldTour stage race win of his fledgling career, Hayter learned it was an even bigger moment that he’d thought. “I was the first British rider to even wear the leader’s jersey at the Tour of Poland. And you’re not normally the first British rider to do something these days,” said the proud Londoner.
Despite winning the Tour of Poland, though, he refuses to get too far ahead of himself. When the 2022 Vuelta a España gets underway in Utrecht on 19 August, Hayter understands his role in the team will change from leader to domestique.
