In the 16 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Punjab Kings have been ousted in the league stage itself on 14 accounts. In the inaugural edition, they were the semi-finalists and in 2014 they reached the final. PBKS are the most underperforming side in IPL history and have never entirely come out of their shell. With changes in management, captains, and chopping players ahead of every auction, Punjab has got things wrong more than right. In the upcoming 2024 edition of the IPL, PBKS need to step out and address the issues plaguing them of late. Shikhar Dhawan’s captaincy will be crucial, and with the addition of several key figures alongside much of their core, the Kings will hope versatility in their squad helps them get past the line. PBKS went hard for Harshal Patel and Rilee Rossouw in the auction, spending a fortune to land the two. In Harshal, they hope to make more purchases at the death. Rossouw, an established T20 stalwart, will hope to make his presence felt in the middle order. England’s Chris Woakes was another key purchase for a big fee.
