In the road racing world, certainly, there had been no shortage of scepticism of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, or the 'Super Worlds' as it's come to be known. This 13-day championship, which brought together all summer cycling disciplines under one tournament in Glasgow and wider Scotland, had seen the Road Worlds shifted forward in the calendar from its now traditional September slot to early August. This not only moved it away from the tail end of the road season, but also parachuted it into a tricky period for any rider who'd competed in the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes.
This, however, is a road-centric take on things, when many of the sports involved, such a track and mountain biking, were in new territory with an early August Worlds. The dates were chosen because it suited Glasgow, the hosts, and they put on a great show. This combined Worlds was a campaign commitment of UCI president David Lappartient, and he'll regard it as a success.
