<p>When he was racing, Eddy Merckx primarily had a reputation for winning, but he was&nbsp;also famously &ndash; or notoriously, if you asked his mechanic &ndash; fanatical about his equipment and set-up, making adjustments mid-race if he wasn&rsquo;t happy. There&rsquo;s a memorable scene in A Sunday in Hell, the iconic documentary about the 1976 edition of Paris-Roubaix, where the race is held up by protesters and Merckx uses this as an opportunity to tinker with his saddle setback, cheekily borrowing a spanner from the Brooklyn service car of his rival Roger de Vlaeminck.</p>
<p>So when he started his own brand in 1980, two years after his retirement from pro racing, there was a very good chance that these would be high-quality bikes.</p>
<p>Merckx brought in Ugo De Rosa &ndash; who had built his Molteni team frames for him since 1973 &ndash; to train him and a team to produce the bikes. Then, just as he did to the peloton, he attacked the bike industry without looking back.</p>
<p>In the first year, Merckx&rsquo;s bikes were ridden by the Belgian Marc team of his former six-day partner Patrick Sercu. They won Het Volk and then later in the year two Tour de France stages. There were many, many more wins to come.</p>
<p>The Corsa Extra was the top Eddy Merckx race bike and was ridden by Merckx-sponsored teams until the mid-1990s including 7-Eleven, Motorola, Telekom and Kelme.</p>
<p>This one is made from f lagship superlight Columbus SLX tubing and is a genuine racer with a brazed-on number peg. Although the paint and decals point to the Lotto team of 1985, the slightly more modern internally routed rear brake cable suggests it may not be an original Lotto Merckx bike&hellip; and those Bontrager tyres would definitely elicit an angry snarl from the Cannibal.</p>
