Setting your hands way ahead of the ball and playing it way back in your stance may feel like it's going to create that slightly steep attack we've always been told is desirable for chipping, but it actually causes more problems than it cures. To play chip shots well, you want to use the true loft on the club at impact. You also want to use your spine angle to pre-set that downward attack, not the ball position and shaft lean.

SHOULDER TILT MATCHES SHAFT ANGLE With the ball in the middle of your stance, feel like your left shoulder tilts slightly downwards to match the very slight forward lean of the shaft.
