TECH Q+A
After a long ride, my front wheel seems to be 'loose' - it wobbles from side to side. I've checked the axle is tight, and didn't have a crash. Any ideas?
Ezra, via email
If the axle is fitted correctly, it's probable the wheel bearings need replacing. Riding in harsh conditions can be tough on bearings, especially if dirt or grime infiltrates them. Also, pressure-washing can blast away the grease that keeps them running smoothly, accelerating wear. As bearings degrade, they develop 'play' (excessive movement within the bearing race/cup), which is likely the sensation you're experiencing.
Lift your bike's front wheel off the ground and give it a spin. If the rotation sounds rough it's another indication that the bearings need replacing. Fortunately, it's a quick job for a qualified mechanic. We'd recommend visiting a bike shop.
where they'll have the necessary tools, and can ensure the correct bearings are ordered and fitted.

Can you give me some advice regarding brake-lever angle?
And are there any other things I should be thinking about? Alice Peterson, via email
Brake lever set-up is a matter of personal preference. You need to consider four key aspects where the lever is located on the handlebar (lever position'), what angle it sits at from horizontal ('lever angle'), how far the lever blade sits from the bar ("lever reach') and how far you like to pull the lever before the brake pads contact the rotor ('bite point').
First, focus on lever position.
You should be braking with just one finger, so slide the lever along the bar until the tip of the blade sits under your index finger. Your finger, hand and lower arm should be in a straight line, when viewed from above.
Next, adjust the lever angle.
