BLACK INTO THE FUTURE

Back In Black: My headline punt in the month of May is James Fanshawe's improving 3yo who certainly looked one to follow on his Newbury return. He went into my notebook on debut at Yarmouth last year when running a race full of promise behind a smart one of Godolphin. He then went to Ascot and was perhaps a shade unlucky not to win the way the race panned out before finally shedding his maiden tag back at Yarmouth. In his final start as a 2yo he was beaten by a positional bias but still ran with plenty of credit. On his return as a three year old, unlike at Doncaster, he defied a strong positional bias to come from off the pace and win with any amount in hand, beating a good field in the process. The handicapper has raised him 6lb for that effort to a mark of 92 which I think is still very lenient. I expect the Newbury form to work out well and that 6lb hike could look like a gift before he runs again next.

Woodhay Wonder:

A Newmarket specialist who has risen through the ranks in recent seasons where she now finds herself between a rock and a hard place. A mark of 99 on her return was just a shade too much weight for her to carry as she was reeled in in the final furlong at her beloved Newmarket. I took plenty of encouragement from that effort however as she would certainly come on for the run as any horse would on their first start of the season but she also managed to stick with the pace throughout the race despite there quite clearly being a positional bias in the favour of horses ridden cold. Stepping forward from that run I expect her to be competitive off a mark of 99 and even gain some black type in the right race.
