ROLLING WITH THE PUNCHES

Hugo Broos has completed his first year as head coach of Bafana Bafana, one which took the side to the brink of the third round of qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup with a mixed bag of performances.

The Belgian, who won the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2017, is a straight-talker who has rubbed some up the wrong way. But he will ultimately be judged on results and that makes his home and away clashes against Liberia in the Cup of Nations qualifiers in September vital to his immediate future.

Team selection: 5/10

Broos made it clear as soon as he arrived that he wanted to rebuild the Bafana side with young blood, but a year in he has chopped and changed so much that there has not been much building going on at all.

In June's vital Cup of Nations qualifier away in Morocco, the Bafana back five and two defensive midfielders had a grand total of 11 caps between them. It wasn't surprising that Morocco had 29 goal attempts in the game and only the brilliance of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stopped them from scoring plenty of goals.
