While Kaizer Chiefs fans have started to get excited about the future under new boss Arthur Zwane, history shows that appointing a former player as a coach, who doesn't have much experience, is W a risky move.
We have seen the likes of Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zidane transition seamlessly into the head coach roles at Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, winning all on offer in their time at the Spanish clubs. However, there have also been more recent examples of managers who failed to live up to the expectations of coaching at their former clubs and ultimately lost their jobs, having not tasted much success.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and Frank Lampard at Chelsea were appointments that tugged on the heartstrings of fans and, while that pre-existing relationship helped in the initial phases, they ultimately failed to compete with the elite managers in the league.
Now Kaizer Chiefs face the same situation with former reserve side coach Zwane stepping up from his role as an assistant coach and into the hot seat at Naturena. Zwane has been a part of the furniture at Chiefs for 22 years, having played for the Soweto giants between 2000 and 2010 before joining the club's ranks as a coach.
