Anderton was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, last July after he underwent a routine scan on what he thought was a leg injury.
The subsequent surgery resulted in a complete knee replacement and the removal of 12cm of his femur.
Tests then revealed the cancer cells were aggressive, and Anderton is currently midway through a course of chemotherapy.
Hopes were high at the Memorial Stadium that Anderton - who made 34 appearances as the Gas won promotion from League Two last season - could return once his treatment ended.
