Having impressed without being particularly productive, the on-loan Liverpool winger teed up goals for Delano Burgzorg and Finn Azaz in Middlesbrough's 5-1 demolition of Luton Town last weekend.

The Scotland international's electric contribution on the right of Boro's front four underlined how influential he has become to Michael Carrick's side since arriving from Anfield in the summer and why he might just emerge as a Championship Player of the Year contender.

Carrick has consistently tempered expectations when it comes to Doak, insisting that the 19-year-old needs to be "carefully managed", "looked after" and "taken care of" in his first season as a regular starter.

Yet his performances - typified by fearless and direct dribbling increasingly demand inclusion and Reds boss Arne Slot even joked about recalling the youngster in a recent media briefing.

Curiously, Doak wasn't supposed to go anywhere this season. Signed from Celtic, for whom he made his professional debut shortly after turning 16, Doak had featured in ten first-team games for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp and was an established back-up to the starting XI.

But the £12m signing of Italy winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus in late August prompted a hasty rethink.
