SHOULD Richard Wood achieve what he wants to this season, there will be few places left in South Yorkshire that don’t roll out the red carpet when the veteran defender is in town.
Yes, he might still have to buy his own pint in Barnsley and areas of Sheffield where the locals are of a red-and-white persuasion, but Wood could be pretty much handed the keys to the rest of the county if he helps Doncaster secure promotion from League Two.
The 38-year-old centre back has already helped Rovers’ neighbours Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham (on three occasions no less) climb divisions during a career spanning two decades.
And, while ending a nine-season stint with the Millers by making the 14-mile switch to Doncaster might have made geographical sense, more importantly Wood was looking for a team to match his continued ambitions in the game with the unique appeal of a countywide hat-trick of promotions spurring him on, too.
