There were 38 goals across the 12 opening group-stage games as the race to Wembley revved up. In the highest-scoring game of the night, Bristol Rovers and Tottenham U21s played out a 3-3 draw in Southern Group G.

Isaac Hutchinson (eight minutes), Kofi Shaw (56) and Luke McCormick (76) were on target for the Pirates, with Will Lankshear (27), Mikey Moore (50) and Damola Ajayi (70) replying for the young Spurs.

Tottenham bagged an extra point by winning the resulting penalty shoot-out 6-5.

There was disappointment for Barnsley in Northern Group F as visiting Manchester United U21s scored three times in the last ten minutes to turn around a two-goal deficit.
