GATESHEAD captains of the past and present are playing a lead role in helping the National League club move on from the departure of FA Trophy-winning manager Rob Elliot.

Just under a year has passed since the former Newcastle United goalkeeper was appointed as interim successor to Mike Williamson after he accepted an offer to take charge of League Two side MK Dons.

Elliot led the Tynesiders to their historic FA Trophy final win over Solihull Moors in May and became only the second Heed boss to secure a National League play-off place last season, even though hopes of earning a spot in the EFL were ended by a dispute of the security of tenure at the International Stadium.

After making an impressive start to the new season, Elliot first drew interest from Carlisle United, but has now been lured by Crawley Town after the League One club made an initial approach to Gateshead last week.

Ben Heed legend Clark is fronting an interim management team alongside current captain Greg Olley, experienced midfielder Jacob Butterfield and the club's head of recruitment Luke Clark.
