watchOS 10 takes the Apple Watch a significant step further, with redesigned apps, a new smart stack, additional watch faces, new cycling features and tools to support mental health. For hikers, there are new Compass Waypoints and Maps features, and the Mindfulness app offers new ways to look after yourself.
"watchOS 10 is a major milestone and an energising new approach for Apple Watch, introducing a fresh new design for quickly viewing information, delightful new watch faces, new features for cyclists and hikers and important tools for health."
Kevin Lynch, Apple's vice president of Technology
The Widgets Smart Stack
Until now, setting up a watch face has involved compromises. You might really like an arty or photo-based face, but are you prepared to sacrifice the on-screen complications to make room for it? With watchOS 10, this isn’t as much of an issue. By turning the Digital Crown you’re shown a smart stack of your information widgets, regardless of what watch face you’re using. Machine learning ensures the smart stack shows you relevant information exactly when you need it. If you have a meeting coming up, for example, the Calendar widget is placed at the top. If you regularly check your rings, Activity is prominent. If you’re running a countdown timer, that’s to the fore. The more you use your watch and watchOS 10, the better it gets at anticipating your needs.
By long-pressing you can edit the smart stack, removing widgets you don’t want to review in this way and adding those you do. There’s even a widget that holds three of your watch Complications. It’s a great new way to use your apps, and you can do it from any watch face.
