What Next for Apple?
Essential Apple User Magazine|Issue 42 - May/Jun 2023
Where will Apple go next, during the rest of 2023 and beyond? What will the next generation of Macs look like? What can we look forward to with Apple's forthcoming mobile devices? What about the new versions of macOS, iOS and iPadOS, due to be announced in June? And what about other rumoured products such as a self-driving car, VR glasses and more? Apple is famously tight-lipped about forthcoming releases, but by watching the rumour mill, analysing trends and keeping our ears to the ground, an interesting picture emerges...
What Next for Apple?

Macs and macOS

What does Apple have in store for Mac users over the next year or two?

The move to Apple Silicon processors continues apace. Since they were first announced in June 2020, the new system-on-a-chips have found their way across Apple’s Macintosh range, with only the Mac Pro still using Intel processors (and rumour has it this will change pretty soon). We already have M2 Apple Silicon chips, so what’s next?

The current MacBook Air has a 13.6-inch screen. Could a new model offer a 15-inch display to gain some extra users?

15-inch MacBook Air

It’s been rumoured for a while, but could 2023 be the year we finally see a new, 15-inch MacBook Air? According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman the screens are already being manufactured, though his original prediction of a March announcement and April release did not come to fruition. It’s also been suggested the new MBA’s screen will not include mini-LED or ProMotion display technology; these features will remain exclusive to the MacBook Pro.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a forthcoming 15-inch notebook – presumably the Air – will come in M2 and M2 Pro chip versions. However, it’s plausible that an M3 Apple Silicon processor will make an appearance. It’s been suggested that the M3 will have an 8-core CPU. If the M3 chip is announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2023, it will appear a year after the M2.
