Google Nest Cam is finally here in India with their indoor and outdoor surveillance model with an in-built battery. The device facilitates seamless smart home integration with Google Home app and comes with features like smart detection and activity zones for complete peace of mind.
The Nest Cam (Battery) has a magnetic base, which offers a really strong force that lets you attach it to any magnetic material without the fear of the device detaching under its weight. The camera attaches magnetically to the base with an equally strong hold. The base can also be attached normally to the wall or ceiling with the help of the included mount with screw holes. Even the charging cable has magnetic pins that hold it in place. The camera is weather-resistant with an IP54 rating and hence can be installed indoors or outdoor.
Connecting the camera is as simple as plugging it in and scanning the QR code via Google Home app. The app lets you view live feed, optimise battery life, and play the recorded footage. The camera offers up to 1080p recording at 30 fps and supports HDR. The camera switches automatically to IR mode (B&amp;W) in the night. The integrated speakers and microphones facilitate full-duplex 2-way audio with noise cancellation. You can operate the camera, access footages, and communicate via the audio channels from anywhere, provided you have an active internet connection. The camera stores up to 3 hours of event history, which can be accessed via the Google Home app. If you need more storage or use intelligent features like Familiar Face Detection, you need a Nest Aware subscription. The Nest Cam is distributed by Tata Play (formerly Tata Sky) and the package, called Tata Play Secure+ offers the camera along with Nest Aware Basic plan and Google Nest Mini smart speaker. The annual subscription cost for the basic plan is ₹3000 for up to four cameras, which increases proportionally in blocks of four cameras. The basic plan offers up to 30 days of online backup.
Since Nest Aware plan and servicing are offered via Tata Play, you need to give permission to the service provider to access the details of your home such as your home nickname and room names you have registered in your Google Home app. Since Familiar Face Detection and Home and Away routines work only with cloud services enabled, this essentially means that the camera's smart features will work only if you are ready to give these permissions to Tata Play, though the footages offer 128-bit AES encryption with TLS/SSL. For those who are looking for a security camera with basic intrusion detection and activity zone-based recording, there are other cameras that do the job well. But the Nest Cam offers voice control via Google Assistant, and a wide range of home and away features in addition to these basic functions.
