The latest entrant in this segment is the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. Sorry to disappoint Harry Potter fans, but however good it rhymes in "Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot and Fronx", it is learnt that the name is actually an acronym for 'Frontier Next'. Well, that sums up the brand's expectation from this car. Maruti Suzuki has been teasing this vehicle for some time, and we finally got a chance to take this compact SUV for a spin in Goa.

The Fronx offers a refreshing design with the front looking much similar to the Grand Vitara. In fact, from the front, the Fronx is a smaller version of the Grand Vitara with the ice-cube shaped LED DRL-cum-turn indicators and LED multi-reflector headlamps set in a triangular cluster in case of the Alpha variant we drove. Broad chrome embellishments in the front add to the style factor. While from the sides, the vehicle looks somewhat similar to the Baleno with a sloping aerodynamic roof and roof end spoilers with some curvy lines added, the rear sports a much more stylish look with an LED strip connecting the tail lamps. The front and rear skid plates add a touch of&nbsp;muscle to the small car. The vehicle is 3995 millimetres long, which makes it only half centimetre longer than the Baleno, and slightly wider at 1765mm.&nbsp;The Fronx is 50 mm taller with a 20mm higher ground clearance. The car runs on 16-inch (195/60) tyres. The Fronx is evidently aimed at young couples and small families and the boot space does not justify this positioning. The car offers 308-litres of boot space, which is even lower than that of the Celerio.
The Fronx is offered in two engine options naturally aspirated 1.2-litre K-series and 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol. The 1197-cc NA engine produces a peak output of 66 kW power and 89.73 PS torque, while the 998-cc Boosterjet produces 73.6 kW of power and 100.06 PS torque. Both variants are offered with 5-speed manual transmission. While the 1.2-litre variant includes an AMT option, the 1.0L turbo variant is offered with a torque converter automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The NA variants are available only up to Delta+ trim, while the Boosterjet variants start with the Zeta configuration, clearly commanding a premium for the turbo variant. As usual, the defining features like 360-degree camera and HUD screen are reserved for the Alpha trim along with Cruise Control and Arkamys surround system.&nbsp;The turbo variants are offered with a Smart Hybrid system. Maruti Suzuki claims a mileage of over 21.5 kmpl for the manual transmission versions and over 22 kmpl for the AMT variant.

The cabin of the Fronx is largely similar to the Baleno with a dual tone finish. The top two variants get a wireless charging mat in the central console along with front central armrest and rear AC vents with dual USB charging ports. The Alpha variant comes with a 22.86 cm touch screen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.&nbsp;Additionally, you get USB and Bluetooth connectivity along with voice assistant and "Hi Suzuki" connected experience via the Suzuki Connect app. The system offers features such as Geofencing, smartwatch connectivity, remote AC control, live vehicle tracking with location sharing, and Alexa integration. ESP, Hill hold Assist, rear defogger, and dual front airbags come as standard across all variants. The rear passenger does not get the option of an armrest. Tall passengers may find it a little difficult to fit into the rear seats, but overall, the rear seats appeared roomy for two passengers. A third passenger can fit in, but the AC vents could be a hindrance for adults. The Fronx features a sporty flat bottom steering wheel that feels connected all the time with ample feedback.&nbsp;The driving position offers excellent visibility. The 360-degree cameras proved a great help while traversing the narrow interior roads in Goa, especially while passing trucks with a ditch on the left side.&nbsp;The cameras remain active below 1400 rpm. The HUD screen provides various configuration options including turn-by-turn navigation, which makes it much more practical than the previous versions.&nbsp;At lower speeds, the vehicle feels a little sluggish, but once the rpm reaches around 2000, the turbo shows its might. The vehicle remained stable even at 110 kmph, which was the maximum speed we could achieve in the city. The car handles potholes and bumps with ease without transmitting it into the cabin.
The price of the Fronx start at 7.46 lakh for the base Sigma variant and goes up to 12.97 lakh for the top Alpha variant. This pricing takes the top variants close to Brezza's mid-range offerings, which is certainly going to make potential buyers take a step back and look at other options.
