Československý Rozhlas was established in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) on 18 May 1923 as Radiojournal, a private company. It initially broadcast from a tent borrowed from scouts that was set up on the outskirts of Prague and was the first continental European broadcaster. It just lost out on being the first European broadcaster as the BBC, in the UK, started broadcasting six months earlier, on 18 October 1922.Czech Radio, as it is now called, has since become a public broadcaster that comprises 25 stations.The description of the photograph is lacking details about the microphone itself, so it's difficult to know what kind it is. It is possible that it is a carbon microphone, which were used in early AM radio broadcasting, although it's unclear if Československý Rozhlas was broadcast via an AM or FM signal in its early days.What is very clear in this picture, however, is the interesting shock mount, which appears to be made of a cabled rope that would have had a bit of elasticity to it, which was then hand threaded around the metal housing and tied together at the bottom left to keep the microphone in the centre carefully suspended in place.The shock mount on other vintage microphones will usually comprise springs that suspend it in the centre of the housing so this construction for Československý Rozhlas is a little more unique but likely equally effective in how it kept the microphone safe from vibrations in the early days of radio.
