At the forefront of change in previously insular Saudi Arabia are five multi-trillion-dollar giga-projects aimed at transforming its landscape and culture. Resorts will mushroom on the Red Sea coast, in the kingdom's mysterious deep south and near Riyadh. In Neom in the north-west, a whole future-proof city will go up. Known as The Line, the megacity will be a 1,600ft-high, 650ft-wide structure built to eventually contain nine million residents. A car-free, carbon-neutral bubble with a regulated microclimate, it will have a high-speed rail with an end-to-end transit of 20 minutes. Planned near the capital.
