THE COMPASSIONATE WARRIOR
Travellers' World|October - November 2023
The first time I met Roshni D'Souza was during a conservation outreach program in Madhya Pradesh. Armed with wit, an amazing amount of compassion and an admirable passion to help people in need, she had the makings of a Green Warrior from the time she stepped foot in the social/ developmental sector. Today, thanks to her and her selfless efforts, countless people in remote corners of India, have received support to live life with dignity. It is an honour to feature her as the Green Warrior of the Month.

THE COMPASSIONATE WARRIOR

Roshni, could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and about your journey from the corporate world to the social sector?

I was born, raised and worked in the corporate sector in Mumbai. While in college I was fascinated by the word tribe and wanted to know more about the tribal heritage, culture and way of living. To this effect, I graduated in Social Anthropology. Despite my heart being in working with tribes, due to financial constraints, I took up a corporate job after graduation. However, after 12 long years of working as a corporate employee, I reached a saturation point and one fine day, I resigned from work, with no backup plans at all. All I knew was that I needed to work with vulnerable communities. Although very few understand my choice of switching from a lucrative career to the social sector, I have no regrets about the decision I took and its decision that has helped me shape who I am today.

how easy or hard was it?

It was a sense of responsibility towards people and the environment that encouraged me to shift gears from corporate life to projects in the social developmental sector with regard to communities and conservation. Post switching, I had an opportunity to work with the Wildlife Conservation Trust, Mumbai (an NGO working in the space of wildlife conservation) where apart from learning, I also had the satisfaction of contributing (no matter how small) to someone’s life and making his/ her world a slightly better place to live in.

National Parks Of India

India is blessed with a rich tapestry of biodiversity that is both a natural heritage and a national treasure. The concept of national parks in the country traces back to the late 19th century when the importance of conserving wildlife began to take root in the consciousness of the colonial administration. The first national park in India, Hailey National Park (now known as Rajaji National Park), was established in 1936, marking a historic commitment to wildlife conservation. The post-independence era saw an exponential increase in protected areas, primarily driven by a need to conserve India’s unique flora and fauna threatened by rampant industrialization and urbanization.
