'The Best Mum In The World'
Princess Diana was a wonderful mum to her two sons, William and Harry. "I can still feel the hugs she used to give us," revealed Prince Harry in the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life And Legacy. "She smothered us with love. She was the best mum in the world."
Diana ensured the princes' childhoods were as normal as possible and they went to school, enjoyed family holidays and had regular jaunts to theme parks.
Diana also took her boys on visits to hospitals and homeless shelters. "This was a real eye-opener," said William, now the Duke of Cambridge and a passionate supporter of several homelessness organisations.
The Power Of The People's Princess
Diana changed public opinion on a wide range of very important matters. By walking through a minefield in front of the world's press, Diana highlighted the desperate need for an international ban on landmines. By making frequent visits to specialist HIV units, she helped to fight the stigma and discrimination that surrounded people with AIDS. By talking openly about her battle with bulimia, she encouraged other people to chat about their mental health issues and seek help.
In addition, by letting us see the real Diana, whether she was on royal duties or in mum-mode, Diana quickly became the People's Princess. Ultimately, this has led to today's more approachable, modern Royal Family.
