Spain seemed the ideal destination to celebrate the 60th birthdays of two of my university friends, as our first student holiday abroad together (can it really be 40 years ago?) had been on an 18 to 30 coach trip from Glasgow to a Costa Brava campsite. Now we wanted to retrace our Spanish steps, albeit on a more upmarket fly-drive villa holiday to Dénia, reached in just 90 minutes from Alicante airport.
