The first thing happened as I was sitting by the pool waiting for my daughter to finish her morning swim. Her coach approached me, "Good news," she said. "Charlie is going up a level!" "Fantastic!" I replied, a small lump of pride giving the word an extra syllable.
"They start at 5am," she added, striding off to destroy some other parent's sleep plans.
"They... wh... huh?" I mumbled with a scrunched-up quizzical look, eyes straining to comprehend this information, the men in my brain rushing one way with the good news of a daughter's progress, bumping into other men with the bad.
I stared at the concrete lip of the pool, calculating my future alarm settings. After some intense negotiation between the aforementioned men in my head, we settled on 4.46am. Minutes matter.
