TIME to get up, Tommy,” Mum said, interrupting an exciting dream.
Tommy did as he always did when Mum woke him up too early; he burrowed his head under his quilt and pretended he was still asleep.
Then Mum did as she always did.
“I know you're awake, Tommy, so come on it’s time for breakfast. Early start today,” she said.
Tommy groaned.
He knew it wasn’t a school day because the Christmas holidays had started, so...
He sat bolt upright.
“Is it Christmas Day?” He’d forgotten to hang up his stocking!
“Not yet,” Mum said, opening his curtains. Tomorrow’s Christmas Eve, remember?”
“So why are we getting up early today?”
Tommy was surprised. Mum should know that nobody got up early except on school days and Christmas Day and birthdays, of course.
“Is it someone’s birthday?”
Tommy would be six on his next birthday, but that was in February.
“You dumpling! How can you have forgotten? This is Grampa’s special day.” Mum laughed.
“You must still be half asleep. Hurry down for breakfast now.”
Tommy rubbed his eyes crossly.
Of course he was still half asleep! It was far too early to be woken up when it wasn’t even Christmas Day.
But he knew he’d be in trouble if he didn’t do as he was told today.
Dad had had a big talk with him about it, telling him what an important day it was for Grampa and Auntie Kath and how everyone had to make it as nice for them as they could.
When Tommy asked why, Dad told him that everyone always wanted a wedding to be perfect.
Tommy knew what he thought about that!
“It would be more perfect if didn’t have to wear a shirt with the uncomfy top button. And the ladies wear shoes they can’t walk in.”
