Why go?
Driving along the winding country lanes of west Dorset towards the seaside town of Lyme Regis, the steep harbour road drops dramatically, revealing a view of the cerulean sea, set against the Golden Cap and the towering cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. It’s a spectacular location and one of the many reasons holidaymakers have been lured here for centuries.
It was Jane Austen’s favourite place and featured in two of her novels – Persuasion and Northanger Abbey – and several TV and film adaptations were filmed in the town. John Fowles lived here and his novel, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, was set in Lyme Regis. More recently, Kate Winslet headed to the town to film Ammonite, based on the life of British palaeontologist, Mary Anning.
