6.30am Ease anxiety

If you’re waking up frazzled or with a feeling of impending doom, it could be menopausal anxiety. Declining oestrogen levels impact our ‘fight or flight’ hormones, causing elevated levels of cortisol – aka the stress hormone – in the body. ‘Just as you’re waking up, your nervous system springs into action,’ says menopause expert Eileen Durward.

Try box breathing to reduce your heart rate, and get your body and mind relaxed. It can help to picture a box as you practise this technique:

Inhale through the nose for a count of four.

Hold the breath for a count of four. 

Exhale through the nose for a count of four.

Hold the breath for a count of four.

Repeat four rounds.
