What did I get Auntie May?’ asked Simon.
Jane reached down and opened one of the bulging carrier bags. ‘A travel pillow. For all those coach holidays she takes.’
‘And my 10-year-old niece? I can never find anything for her.’
‘She was easy,’ said Jane. Another rummage produced a gold-and-green striped box. ‘It’s a manicure set.’
‘It’s perfect, thanks.’ He finished his cup of coffee and leant back in his chair. ‘Tell me, how did I manage before you came along? Half my family seem to have birthdays this month and it makes shopping a nightmare!’
‘I haven’t a clue,’ said Jane, her green eyes flashing. ‘Now, where’s that double chocolate gateau you promised me?’
Jane watched him walk to the counter. Who’d have her luck? About to turn 30, with a well-paid job that she really enjoyed, a home of her own and a nice car – everything a girl could want. There was only one thing missing. She’d tried it all – speed dating, various clubs and evening classes. She had even answered ads in the paper, but none of the relationships lasted very long. It wasn’t the men’s fault. In another lifetime, she might have built a future with one of them.
She arranged the carrier bags in a neat and tidy pile. Buying Simon’s presents meant more to her than she could ever let on. It was a chance to imagine what it would be like if she were his girlfriend, even if it was only for a few short hours.
He was coming back to their table. Jane switched on her smile. He must never find out how she felt about him.
