START YOUR JOURNEY
The closest airport to the Florida Keys is Miami, so begin here with a mini break – it’s every bit the vibrant city you see on film and TV. Walking along Ocean Drive, with its ice cream-coloured art deco buildings, rows of palm trees and sea views, it’s not hard to see why big names like Cameron Diaz and Simon Cowell have made it their chill-out spot of choice.
Tickets to big attractions can cost around $50/£38 each, so get a Miami Pass (from $84/£65; gocity.com) to save money on visits to tourist sites, including the Millionaire’s Row Sightseeing Cruise, Lion Country Safari and more.
Where to stay: In the midst of South Beach’s cool, casual vibe sits oceanfront Royal Palm South Beach, overlooking the Miami skyline and the sea for a relaxing and calm stay. Rooms from £128; royalpalm southbeach.com.
AMERICAN ADVENTURE
An hour’s drive from Miami, Everglades National Park is a must-see addition to your itinerary. At the southern end sits Flamingo Everglades (flamingoeverglades.com) where you’ll see an array of wildlife, including alligators, manatees, and bird species such as the iconic roseate spoonbill. Hop on a daily boat tour (from $24/£18) to see animals in their natural habitat - an amazing thrill.
