Since joining the Loose Women panel in 2019, Brenda Edwards has gone on to become a firm favourite with viewers.

The West End star found fame on The X Factor in 2005 under the mentorship of Sharon Osbourne and has lived a life of highs and lows. Despite losing both her parents tragically at just four years old, and her son, Jamal suddenly passing away two years ago aged 31, Brenda still manages to see the joy in every day.

When Woman's Own catches up with her, the star's upbeat persona shines through and it's clear that if the tough times have taught her anything, it's to be unafraid to throw herself into new challenges. As a prime example, the singer who is also mum to daughter tanisha - recently learnt to swim for the first time, at the age of 55.

Here, Brenda fills us in on why she is grateful to be alive, her Strictly plans and overcoming the menopause...

It's great to see you again! Are you still enjoying Loose Women?

It's been five and a half years now and I love it. I get on with everybody - I'm not involved in anything. Everybody says we don't get on, but we do. I get on with everybody and I just keep myself to myself and enjoy the show. I'm really honoured. with the platform it has given me.

You seem to be very close to Coleen Nolan...

I'm close to all of them, along with Judi [Love], Charlene [White], Kéllé [Bryan], Kaye [Adams] and Jane [Moore].

You revealed on the show recently that you got a bike, but you've yet to use it...
