What do I know about growing fruit and veg? I'm not sure I've done the right thing.'

'Of course you have, Connie, you've been saying for ages you wanted more space to grow things. That tiny balcony of yours is all right for a few pots, but you said wanted to you meet new people too.'

'You're right, Bernie. I just wasn't expecting to hear back about the allotment so soon. I'm scared my lack of experience will make me look like a total amateur - which is exactly what I am, of course.'

The email had just arrived: We are pleased to offer you plot 28 at Greenacre Allotments and look forward to meeting you.

Funny the 28th had been David's birthday.

'Connie, you'll be fine. You'll learn as you go along. Think of all the lovely fresh produce you'll grow. You'll meet new friends - and perhaps there will be a Monty Don type there too!'

Connie half smiled. Best friend Bernie was always trying to match-make. Since losing her husband five Connie had been years ago, resigned to life on her own.

Excitement was mixed with trepidation. 'I need a list gardening books from the library, buy tools and seeds from the garden centre, dig out old wellies...'
