Wake up, sleepy head!’ Frank peered blearily at the clock. ‘But, Carol, it’s only eight o’clock. What’s the rush?’ He reached for her, but she moved out of his way.
‘I don’t want to waste a single second. We need an early breakfast so we can do justice to Christmas dinner.’ She smiled. ‘Just think, for the first time in years, we’re in a hotel – somebody else is doing all the work.’
Frank leant back on the pillow. He loved seeing his wife so happy and relaxed. They hadn’t been able to get away during the summer, which made this break even more special.
Soon Carol emerged from the shower, her long grey hair wrapped in a beautifully tidy towel turban. After almost 40 years of marriage, Frank still had no idea how she did it.
‘Your turn,’ she said as she pulled the quilt off the bed.
Over breakfast they met Mary and Simon Brown, who invited them to join their table for Christmas dinner later. ‘Another two won’t make any difference,’ Mary explained.
Breakfast over, Frank and Carol headed outside. Scarborough was as beautiful as ever, but bitterly cold.
‘Shame the ice-cream shops aren’t open,’ said Carol.
