When it premiered on April 24, 1971, Young Talent Time was an instant runaway success. Hosted by pop idol Johnny Young and featuring six extraordinarily talented Young Talent Team members, the weekly variety show was groundbreaking and Australia warmly embraced the family favourite. Five decades on, a new book entitled 50 Years Of Young Talent Time has been released, so Woman's Day brought together some former members for a chat and a dance down memory lane.
GREG ΡΟΥΝΤΟΝ
Greg, the mover and shaker behind the book he co-wrote with Milton Hammon and Brett Leslie, joined Young Talent Time in 1984.
The now 51-year-old soon became the blond teenage heartthrob of the show. "I loved my time on YTT - it was a very gruelling schedule, four nights of rehearsals and all day Saturday," says Greg, a father-of-three and owner of the popular East Melbourne restaurant Alley Cat. "I loved working with Tina Arena and Dannii Minogue. They are true to their friendships and genuinely look after people."
But fame had its downside.
"I was bullied at school. I think a lot of it had to do with the YTT boys having a lot of female fans, and it made the guys jealous," recalls Greg.
