“During a long period, Her Majesty has been aff ected by problems with her back and in recent times the situation has worsened,” a spokesperson says, adding that all her offi cial engagements have been postponed, cancelled or will be undertaken by other members of the Danish royal house, including Crown Prince Frederik, 54, and his Aussie wife, Crown Princess Mary, 51.
And while the tough-as-nails Queen is putting on a brave face, a palace insider tells Woman’s Day the family is under no illusions this surgery will be an easy feat, with Fred and Mary rushing to be at her side at Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet.
