The scorching heat of summer makes us yearn for early rains. The first rain wets the earth, and the mud gives out a pleasant smell as it soaks up the rain. Soon, the torrential rains arrive, bringing a host of illnesses such as various fevers and gastroenteritis.
High humidity and warm temperatures create an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria and viruses. Mosquitoes, air, contaminated water, and food are major means by which illnesses spread during the rains.
Here is a list of common monsoon illnesses, which can be avoided to a great extent by taking a few simple precautions:
Mosquito-Borne illnesses
Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya: These are transmitted by the bites of infected mosquitoes. Less commonly, West Nile virus fever, Zika virus fever, yellow fever, and filariasis can also occur.
Prevention: Ensure there are no mosquito breeding spots in and around the house. Use mosquito nets at night, cover windows with mosquito-proof nets, apply mosquito repellents, and wear full-sleeve clothes. Female Anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit malaria, bite at night, while Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which transmit dengue and chikungunya, are daytime feeders.
Simple Steps to Prevent Mosquito Breeding:
• Ensure water does not collect in and around the house.
