Tackling Sleep Issues

I find the night long, for I sleep but little, and think much.

By Charles Dickens

Mrs. Rajni had Covid-19 in September 2021. She recovered well and fully except that she developed sleep disturbance and insomnia. She said that “I was regularly sleeping well and for 6-8 hours before Covid-19 infection. Now, I don’t fall sleep easily after going to bed. I sleep hardly 2-3 hours in the night and remain drowsy in the day which is affecting my job in the office. I don’t get proper long and deep sleep, which is causing anxiety, agitation, weakness, and inability to concentrate.”

She tried various practices to get sleep such as putting off all light, taking a warm bath, and a warm glass of milk before going to bed. She started doing physical exercise also but nothing worked. She started taking sleeping pills as per advice of her physician.

She consulted me during her health checkup in Apollo Clinic, Gurgaon. I heard her history patiently and understood her problem.

The sleep disturbances and their effects were created by her anxiety due to Covid-19. It affected her sleep and general health. I advised her to do meditation and deep abdominal breathing regularly and she followed it.

She improved with these practices and after two weeks stopped taking sleeping pills. She took total eight weeks to become normal with normal sleep.

Isolation and quarantine at home during Covid-19 pandemic caused various mental issues and, barring these, the daily news reporting deaths caused stress, especially in people suffering from the disease. Threatening information with social isolation caused severe mental pressure.
