I'd have loved a characterful old farmhouse, but when I started house-hunting I had to prioritise head over heart,' says Holly. 'I'm fascinated by older properties, but with two small boys, my focus was on finding the right space and location.
'My partner Paul and I were looking to rent and, although this house was dark, tired and not my style, it was very practical. The three bedrooms, roomy garden and handy position close to family and school sealed the deal for us, but I wanted it to be more than a convenient, functional house, so I set to work brightening it up.
Going neutral
When it came to the decor, I opted for white and neutral colours. It might not seem a good idea with a young family, but I have washable loose covers on the sofas, and everything is easy to clean or touch up. All white could feel a bit clinical and cold too, which I'd hate, but I've added touches of wood, plus some greenery. Texture is the other essential. Knobbly rugs, woolly throws, faux furs and rough, scrunchy hessian all add depth and interest.
