The PAGEBOY

Why was little Oliver so upset about his wedding-day role?
The PAGEBOY

‘I don’t want to be a pageboy at Uncle Jamie’s wedding!’

Six-year-old Oliver shook his head and glared at his mum Emily and his grandma.

‘But you love Uncle Jamie,’ Emily said. ‘He really wants you to be his pageboy.’

‘No!’ Oliver stamped his foot and ran upstairs to his room.

Emily and her mother Joyce looked at each other mystified.

‘This is so unlike him,’ Emily said. ‘He rarely has tantrums.’

She hurried after him, asking what was wrong, but he sat on his bedroom floor playing with his toy cars, refusing to tell her.

Back downstairs, Emily gratefully accepted the cup of tea and biscuit Joyce handed to her.

‘Maybe he overheard us saying the men would be wearing kilts,’ Joyce suggested. ‘He hates getting dressed up for anything.’

‘Maybe,’ Emily said, but she wasn’t sure that was the reason.

‘Jamie will be so disappointed,’ Joyce said sadly.

‘I know,’ Emily bit her lip. ‘Oliver’s going with Jamie to the football on Saturday. Maybe Jamie can get to the bottom of it.’

Joyce nodded. ‘Yes, he adores Jamie. If anyone can change Oliver’s mind, it’ll be him.’
