We often hear that sugary sodas and even diet sodas can make us gain weight and get sick. But how great would it be if sipping glass after refreshing glass could actually fight disease and program our body to burn fat? Well, that's just what 'DIY healthy Coke' does-and why it's a social media sensation! The two-ingredient recipe was created by Yale-trained nutrition expert and Unlocking the Keto Code author Steven R. Gundry, M.D. "I used to be a Diet Coke addict," Dr. Gundry admits. "I tried switching to sparkling water, but it didn't have enough zing to replace the soda I was used to. On a whim, I added a little balsamic vinegar to San Pellegrino. I couldn't believe how good it was." He began drinking it daily and sharing the recipe with patients. Results were so impressive, "I made a YouTube video." The drink has ended up with tens of millions of fans. Many insist it tastes uncannily like real cola-and helps transform bodies like magic!
Making Dr. Gundry's soda is easy. Just stir 1 to 2 Tbs. of balsamic vinegar (or your favorite vinegar) into a glass of unsweetened sparkling water with ice. For great flavor, the doc loves Napa Valley Naturals Grand Reserve ($11, Walmart). Many bloggers insist a mixer with fruit essence, like lime or guava La Croix water, creates the most authentic taste. "It's exactly like Coke," raves one devotee, whose soda post has 6.5 million hits. Dr.Gundry notes that vinegar should be well-diluted to protect tooth enamel, but beyond that, "experiment to find what you enjoy. The more you drink, the better off you'll be."
