But the teenager, Ajeet Singh, was distressed. He could not sleep that night at his cousin’s house near Varanasi. He kept wondering about the fate of that sex worker, trying to please the lustful eyes of men to make a living.
Early in the morning, 18-year-old Ajeet mustered the courage to go and tell that sex worker that if she gave him her children, he would educate them in order to improve their lot. He brought the three kids home and sent them to school. But he had to face the scolding of his parents and the scorn of the neighbours. A few days later, the nautch girl came and took her children back home.
Though Ajeet failed then, in 1998, to script a success story of anti-human trafficking, the fire was lit in him. “The way people were looking at her and treating her was something that shocked and deeply saddened me,” he recalls. “It was then and there that I decided to do something to free girls like her from such a profession.”
