German footwear brand BIRKENSTOCK–with origins dating back to the late 18th century — has entered the Indian market, starting with sale of its popular sandals online before opening a store. Leayan Global has roped in Vicky Kaushal, Bollywood actor, as the brand ambassador for its leading leather footwear brand Red Chief. These are a few from a long list.
The industry is certainly going to see lots of action. What does this mean for the second largest footwear producer? Today India’s footwear production accounts for approximately 9 per cent of the global annual production of 22 billion pairs. It is expected to grow further.
