The COVID-19 pandemic started at a time of increasing global economic uncertainty. Consumption levels are falling along with investment and unemployment has been rising since. It’s apparent that more economies are on the precipice of the greatest real recession.
Remote it may seem now, there will be a recovery and many are
asking: how different will the post-COVID-19 era be from the one we were accustomed to? The most tangible effect we see is on technology adoption and general versatility with digital commerce and content. Resultantly, there has been a perceptible increase in media consumption during the last few weeks as people have remained homebound.
The recessionary impact could have a knock-on effect. The segments most affected by the lockdown have been those that rely on a social gatherings and their recovery here might take longer. It is likely that certain sections of consumers – mainly from COVID-19 hotspots– are likely to remain apprehensive of crowds. Generally, there could be a change of priorities as we progress to a new normal.
It’s hoped that the new normal will be a safer world, where we would get to relive the old world.

When something like a pandemic strikes humanity, it strikes all of us. Not only is our health threatened, but in some ways, our way of life is too.

Having largely ignored Covid-19 as it spread across China, global financial markets reacted strongly last week when the virus spread to Europe and the Middle East, stoking fears of a global pandemic. Since then, Covid-19 risks have been priced so aggressively across various asset classes that some fear a recession in the global economy may be a foregone conclusion.
Business leaders are asking whether the market drawdown truly signals a recession, how bad a Covid-19 recession would be, what the scenarios are for growth and recovery, and whether there will be any lasting structural impact from the unfolding crisis. It’s hoped that the global collective battle will help overcome this, and soon we will emerge stronger.

Many are of the view that India should keep its target big so that it can achieve bigger. In a country where 60% of the population is young and the middle class population is burgeoning, there is enough space for anyone to think big and also to achieve big targets.
When 2019 ended with a grim air, many declared that the year witnessed slow growth and the market failed to excite many. But a closer examination proved it all wrong; brands flocked to the Indian market. At such a point the economic readjustment China has been going through gives India the opportunity to fill in gaps its neighbor has created.

German footwear brand BIRKENSTOCK–with origins dating back to the late 18th century — has entered the Indian market, starting with sale of its popular sandals online before opening a store. Leayan Global has roped in Vicky Kaushal, Bollywood actor, as the brand ambassador for its leading leather footwear brand Red Chief. These are a few from a long list.
The industry is certainly going to see lots of action. What does this mean for the second largest footwear producer? Today India’s footwear production accounts for approximately 9 per cent of the global annual production of 22 billion pairs. It is expected to grow further. Given some of the measures introduced by the government in the face of slowdown, every stakeholder has the valid reason to be optimistic.

Adidas is going to shut its Ansbach and Atlanta Speedfactories with the aim to deploy the technology at Asian suppliers soon. The company expects this to result in better utilization of existing production capacity and more flexibility in product design. If it has disappointed a lot, the release by Wolverine World Wide did just the opposite.
It announced that its third-quarter earnings topped estimates. In its financial report for the period ended Sept. 28, the footwear manufacturer logged adjusted diluted earnings per share that climbed 9.7% to 68 cents, 6 cents above Wall Street estimates. Revenues rose 2.8% to $574.3 million, roughly in line with consensus bets of $574.5 million.

At the macro levels the signs are gloomy and the effects of structural changes to trickle down is likely to take time. But right below, things
are happening. For instance, to celebrate womanhood sport brand Puma has unveiled its new campaign titled Propah Lady. The campaign counters the conventional idea of what makes women proper and redefines it. On another front, Austrian fibre producer Lenzing Group announced plans to enter the footwear segment in India, introducing Tencel for Footwear. It’s important since it is known for its unique and globally acclaimed concept of the botanic shoe or sustainable options in footwear. The launch comes at a time when the Indian government has committed to ending the use of single-use plastic in the coming years. It’s not in footwear alone, the watch segment also witnessed the entry
of Swiss brand Hublot. It launched a flagship boutique in Mumbai, its first standalone store in the market. These are the signs indicating that everything is vibrant and it won’t take much time for the economy to bounce back.
