What is Freedom?

For those who love anything with wheels attached to engines, it’s that moment when you’re behind the wheel (or the handlebar), you floor the accelerator, and suddenly a weight lifts off your shoulders, your responsibilities become a distant sight in the rear-view mirror as you keep barreling down the road, while the machine sings its exquisite melody.  

Of course, this is just one example, and there are various definitions of freedom. For example, Samir Kakkad — a differently-abled person who pushed past every physical and mental boundary to drive from Ahmedabad to London; that’s liberation. Yogi Chhabria, the man who restores two-wheelers and turns them into works of art; that’s freedom of expression. 

We’ve celebrated freedom in our own unique ways, too; Pablo took off to Italy and blazed through the countryside in the Lamborghini Revuelto, and later also checked out numerous Skoda exotics in the Czech Republic. Kartik got to experience Royal Enfield’s next Sherpa-engined step in Spain with the Guerrilla 450, while Manaal and Keshav decided to embrace the #wanderlust feeling by heading off on an adventure on their own, also on Royal Enfields. Heading to a tank museum in Ahmednagar in the Jeep Wrangler was Kurt’s idea of celebrating freedom, but that didn’t stop him from ‘breaking free’ with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny either. 


In our regulars, we’ve checked out the new long-wheelbase BMW 5 Series, the Nissan X-Trail, the smallest EV from Mercedes-Benz yet, and the Kia Sonet X Line. On the other hand, we also got to experience both sides of sustainable mobility on two-wheels, quite literally; from natural gas to battery-electric. 

Overall, the definition of freedom basically is whatever you make of it. So go ahead and break free, even if it means the end of something, because it’s leading to the start of something new. Here’s to the open road and the endless opportunities it brings!

This month, we’re celebrating art; we are going to take you through the visual aspect of automobiles. From seeing and understanding the culture of truck art in our country, catching up with a Fiat 1100 immaculately restored by a South African baker, to even a series of postcards coming from two-wheelers that currently rule the roads of India. To kick things up several notches, we blazed around the racetrack in the Tata Altroz Racer, and also caught up with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance. In the quest to find out which one ultimately speaks to your heart, we also went dancing with two naked beauties from Italy and Japan. 

Let’s not forget our regulars either; we checked out the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, the Mahindra Scorpio N, the BMW R 1300 GS, BGauss RUV 350, and the latest tyres from Vredestein. While Volkswagen Experiences took us to Ladakh, we also found a slice of Tibet in Karnataka, with the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Last but not the least, our shutterbug finally got a chance to get into leathers for some actual race action!

There’s never going to be a shortage of conflicts when it comes to the automotive world. Someone will be pitting a litre-class monster against a 600cc supersport, ICE vs EV, a classic car against its modern rendition, a Comet against an auto rickshaw… oh wait, that’s us!

This month is all about settling conflicts of all kinds; whether the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R can beat  the BMW S 1000 RR at its own game or not, in a final attempt, or how different two mopeds can be despite sharing the Luna nametag, or how the ES300h matches up to the Lexus LS 400, or even how the Comet manages to have an upper hand against the countless auto-rickshaws that rule the roads of Mumbai. 

Then we’ve got our regulars too; with the new Maruti Suzuki Swift, we are contemplating whether familiarity breeds contempt or not, and along with that, we’ve also got our hands on the Audi RS e-tron GT, the BMW X3, the BMW M340i, the biggest-ever Pulsar yet, the Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE, and the electric scooter that seems to pack ‘rizz’, if you know what we mean. 

Before we forget, we also joined forces with other publications and embarked on the AJAI Bharat Drive. AJAI, short for Automotive Journalists Association of India, is an initiative that works towards creating safer driving conditions in the country, and also helps groom the next generation of motoring scribes. 

With the ongoing heatwave, do remember to stay hydrated, and no sunbathing! Later.

The heat has officially arrived, and it's brought its A game - so we decided to fight fire with fire. This issue is dedicated to speed and power, to all the fast things that move us and to pushing things to the edge. Needless to say, we’ve done things MW-style, which is to say very differently. For example, what better way to review a Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder than to have a father-daughter duo take it for a spin - especially if the daughter is named Miura?

That’s certainly not all though; Manaal tries to make sense of complex mathematical dilemmas with the BMW S 1000 RR and the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S, while also befriending a devil in the form of the Ducati Diavel V4. Kartik was found with an Italian and a Japanese, discovering that it’s about how you’re going fast, and not how fast you’re going. Meanwhile, Kurt shows you the versatility of a BMW XM. Yes, versatility from an M car! 

We also checked out the 2024 Force Gurkha, the Jeep Wrangler facelift, Mahindra 3XO, Volvo XC40 Recharge RWD, BYD Seal, and the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Boosterjet. On two wheels, we’ve got the Honda XL750 Transalp for you, along with the Pulsar N250, and a battle between India’s sportiest econo-misers, to round things off (we didn’t stop having fun even at the economy end of things, as you can see). That’s what this issue is about, so happy reading!

Travel — it’s a wonderful thing, isn’t it? It is through travelling that one learns of new cultures, new lifestyles, and experiences various new things in life. Nothing else will recharge your mental batteries like seeing the sunrise in the mountains, or reminiscing about good times while riding along the coastline, seeing the sun go down. These are a few of the things we did this month!

This time, Manaal hits the dunes of Rajasthan with the Desert X and the Mahindra Thar, in order to find the relation between the desert and the two machines named after it, while Kartik discovers a thing or two about evolution heading down to Goa, via NH66 on the Bullet 350 and the Jawa 350. Keshav tried to re-learn Indian-American history on his adventure to Calicut with the Indian Chief Bobber Dark Horse, and later also challenged range anxiety by going camping on the ‘SUV of Scooters.’ Good idea, right? Speaking of good ideas, Aaradhya thought it would be a great one to take off to Auli in an MG Hector and try to learn skiing. 

That’s not all; we’ve also pitted the newest Husky against its orange-blooded Austrian cousin, while also comparing the Shotgun 650 with a Ninja in disguise, and taking a trip to Hero’s Neemrana plant in Rajasthan. Among the regulars, we’ve sampled the Hyundai Creta N Line, Force Urbania, Audi RS5 Sportback, the BMW XM, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450d and more.

The automotive world has traditionally been male-dominated, but thankfully this is changing. We’ve had the privilege of being among the few publications who’ve had a number of women in our ranks over the years, and we're proud of this fact. 



This month, we put the spotlight on women in various sectors of the automotive industry. We spent a day with the 14-year old Nithila Das, who is already an ace dirt-biker and looks set for bigger achievements. We also interacted with Ramkripa Ananthan, who was behind the design of the crowd-favourite Mahindra Thar, and is now spearheading the design department at Ola Electric. Melissa Holbrook Pierson, an internationally-renowned writer and motorcycle enthusiast, was kind enough to contribute to this issue. We also had the pleasure of spending some time with Mrinalini Deshprabhu, a vintage and classic car enthusiast, who owns several beautiful cars. Lastly, Vaishali Dinakaran needs no introduction to regular readers of this magazine, and in this issue she reflects on her journey as an automotive journalist.

We also drove the BMW X5, the Mahindra XUV700 facelift, some newly-launched Mercs, the Tata Tigor iCNG AMT and the Range Rover Velar. On the two-wheeler front, we checked out the Kawasaki Eliminator and pitted the Triumph Scrambler 400 X and RE Himalayan against each other, while also heading out to the Royal Enfield Track School. Carrying forward our celebrations from last month, we have now stepped into February, and we aren’t stopping anytime soon! As you’ll see, we have two covers this time around; read Pablo’s column to find out why. 

This time, we have dived into two crucial subjects; technology and design. We took it upon ourselves to help our readers understand how tech and design come together in real life. It starts with Tirth catching up with a student racing team and learning how a Formula racing car is built. 
We then headed to the MIT School of Design, to discover the future of automotive design. We also spent some time with Narayan Subramaniam from Ultraviolette Automotive, learning the key role tech and design play in an automotive start-up. Kurt discovered the science behind how EV batteries ‘quench’ their thirst, so to say. Up north, Anubhav tried to put two and two together, with the MG Comet and TVS iQube.  

In other news, Pablo crossed international waters to check out the new Hyundai Santa Fe, while also shooting both barrels with the Shotgun 650. Kartik tried figuring out if black really is the new orange with the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401, while Manaal got back in action with the Xtreme 125R. Keshav headed to the dry state (you know which one) to see if the new Jawa 350 finally gets it right or not. We’ve also sampled the Tata Punch EV, the Hyundai Creta and Kia Sonet facelifts, the Citroen C3 Aircross Automatic, Aprilia RS 457 and more.

IT'S OUR 25TH BIRTHDAY!

Do you remember what it felt like to turn 25? Thanks to you, our readers and subscribers, we're getting to experience the same feeling. Not only are we celebrating our 25th anniversary this year, but we're also pulling out all the stops, with an entire year of special issues coming your way.

This month, we have 25 special stories for you! Each story celebrates our love for everything on wheels, the true essence of Motoring, and what it means to be an enthusiast. The crew headed out to the sleepy heritage town of Udvada, to brainstorm ideas for this very issue. Pablo went and checked out the very first Morris Mini to come to India, especially after finding out it was in Goa. Heading north, Anubhav thought that driving the AMG SL55 with its top down would be a perfect way to make the Delhi crowds envious. And how many people do you know who can boast of driving up to Ladakh in a VW Camper?

Venturing into international waters, we explored the 1000 Miglia Xperience drive in the UAE, followed by a ride in the vast Russian northlands. Back at base, Kartik discovered 500 shades of grey while bringing together three iconic motorcycles, seeking revenge against a certain four-stroker. Manaal put together the three generations of the KTM 390 Duke, while Keshav, fresh from learning the art of wheelie-ing, decided to kick things up a notch; we also checked out a beloved two-stroker turned into a cafe racer. There were British and Japanese marvels to see in Bengaluru, and then we foolishly challenged CS Santosh to a duel. Oh, and we reminisced with an ex-Motoring man who's busy testing tractors these days.

It is finally October, there’s mud and muck aplenty and the gloves are off! When it comes to frolicking in the slush, we take it very seriously (well, as seriously as we possibly can that is).

We had Ruman doing a cameo for us as he drove the Mahindra Thar to Goa for an unlikely adventure. Back in Mumbai, Keshav gets a tour of the city while squeezing every ounce of fun out of Hero MotoCorp's Splendor and TVS Radeon. We had Janak compete in the Royal Enfield Continental GT-R650 media race. Meanwhile, Kartik rode the 1955 Triumph Tiger T100 and the Kawasaki W800 to see if the spirit of an old archetype could still be alive in this day and age.
