This issue, we welcome SAFRA Punggol, opening in April, as the sixth SAFRA club. With it, there are now even more choices for SAFRA members to enjoy their membership privileges! We also speak with Navy serviceman Jason Chee, whose life has changed after a workplace accident and is now a gold medal-winning para-athlete and inspirational sporting hero. For our Travel section, we're showcasing snow-laden destinations where you can take your family for a perfect wintry vacation. Those who love off-the-beaten-track locations can also take a leaf from our cover personality, Scott Tay, an adventurer with a heart; he shares about the expeditions he has led to far-flung destinations such as Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

A good celebration is not complete without a good dose of fun and laughter. We’ll gear you up for the festive celebratory mood with our top picks of apps for game night as well as some all-time dance favourites that will get you and your posse onto the dance floor. The festivities might mean that there’s a good chance of being a little overindulgent in “wholesome” good foods. But our article in Savvy will show you some detoxification tips for both the body and soul.

There is also much happening on the SAFRA front at this time of the year. We get up close with the newest amenities and programmes at the newly enhanced SAFRA Mount Faber. A galore of races and challenges also await us at this time of the year. There’s the inaugural SAFRA Dragon Battle, a unique dragon boating challenge infused with tug of war; baby-crawling Diaper Dash 2019; and SAFRA’s annual Swim for Hope charity fund-raiser.

Last but not least, In Together as One, SAF veterans from the Singapore Armed Forces Veterans League share with our readers why their volunteering work on educating the younger generation of Singaporeans about the importance of national service is paramount to Singapore’s future.


In our “Charity” issue for Sep-Oct, we have a heart-to-heart talk with national swimmer Pang Sheng Jun, who shares with us why he values hard work over raw talent.

For this issue, we look at what it means to be charitable. In our Travel article, we show you how it is possible to go on vacation while extending a helping hand to those in need. In Savvy, we explore what fund-raising entails, whether for charity or a personal cause. Indeed the spirit of charity is also highlighted in our interview with volunteers at the SAFRA Community Services Club, who explain to us why giving back to society is so important.

More SAFRA activities catered for families take centre stage in our Insider section. There’s Family Day Out SG Bicentennial at Fort Canning that pays homage to Singapore’s centuries-old history; Families for Life Celebrations at SAFRA Punggol, which drew huge crowds for the waterway fun walk and fireworks spectacle; and Lil’ Stars, a talent contest for kids aged between five and 12 at SAFRA Toa Payoh.

In our Jul-Aug issue, which celebrates our National Day, we put together a stellar showcase of all things Singaporean. In our cover story, we chat with Singaporean director extraordinaire Royston Tan, who shares the favourite moments of his award-winning career as well as his film-making process.

Our focus on local talents will also let readers have a glimpse of what young, budding musicians in Singapore are doing to kick-start and springboard themselves into a successful career, as well as Singapore cuisine and its evolution.

In this issue, we also look at SAFRA family-themed events such as the Prawning Challenge at Hai Bin Punggol and National Day-themed celebrations at all six SAFRA clubs island-wide. In our May/June issue, we pay homage to Family. Fronting the issue is a feature story on two next-generation young hawkers who have entered the trade with aplomb. It is an account of the challenges they face – gruelling hours, laborious work – as well as the silver linings they see. In this edition, we’ve curated must-haves for the travel buff in need of recharging at home – check out various kid- and family-friendly staycations in Singapore. Other family-themed lifestyle staples include highly recommended family-friendly digital apps as well as unique home improvement hacks for hassle-free parenting.  

The family unit also takes centrestage as we feature SAFRA events that encourage more family bonding. These include the first-ever SAFRA Go-Karting Challenge, a heart-pounding urban bike race at SAFRA Yishun, and the refurbished SAFRA Tampines clubhouse, which recently reopened its doors with a celebratory bash.

Our Green Issue explores the very pressing subject of sustainability. From how one man gave up a promising career overseas to return to Singapore as an urban farmer, to how easy it is to be environmentally friendly by choosing tech toys that are also green gadgets, eco products which save the earth, and emission-free electric cars. 
And if you’re thinking of a holiday, why not an eco getaway to Sri Lanka’s Gal Oya Lodge, with its back-to-nature bungalows next to one of the island’s biggest national parks? This green focus comes as SAFRA marks Earth Day by raising eco awareness through entertainment and education. We also look at successful programmes like Cohesion Building through fun and games, and how SAFRA also nurtures NSmen by supporting them with bond-free sponsorships. For those more interested in good food, tune in to 88.3Jia FM’s Shu Hui & Jia Fa. The pair of knowledgeable DJs will introduce new and interesting places for lunch called “午餐最正点”.

This issue, we are excited to look forward to new developments on the horizon for SAFRA. This includes refurbishments at the SAFRA clubs in Mount Faber, Tampines and Yishun, as well as the upcoming launch of a brand-new club in Choa Chu Kang in 2022. At the 45th Annual General Meeting last November, it was announced that annual participation in SAFRA-organised activities had grown – by a whopping 26 per cent – to over 1 million, while annual club visitation rose to over 8.8 million. In 2018, events that saw strong participation included the latest Family Day Out activities held along the Singapore River, which held a sports carnival during the day and a night camp for some fun under the stars. We also reflect on our commitment to providing top-notch service to SAFRA members and all visitors to our clubs. Last year, nine SAFRA staff, including a lifeguard who helped resuscitate a SAFRA member, were recognised with Excellent Service Star Awards. Our Feature personalities Alaric Choo and Ian Ang know all about delivering a great product with memorable servce. Their homegrown startup Secretlab is now selling quality gaming chairs to over 50 countries after just four years in business.

This issue, we look back at an eventful 2018, a year during which we are proud to have introduced a series of meaningful "We Thank NSmen" initiatives, and to have organised more activities for NSmen and their families to bond over. These activities included the 26th SAFRA Singapore Bay Run and Army Half Marathon, which saw a record number of family members joining NSmen to keep fit and spend quality time; SAFRA Family Fiesta, which was supported enthusiastically by NSmen and their loved ones, and was graced by President Halimah Yacob as the Guest-of-Honour; SAFRA Swim for Hope, which saw more than 2,000 registered participants raising funds for beneficiaries by swimming laps in SAFRA club pools; and SAFRA Family Day Out, which brought NSmen and their families to KidZania Singapore for a fun-filled evening of trying out different, exciting careers together. There was also a theme of strong family bonds in our interview with Feature personality Eugene Ng, a national wushu champion who represents Singapore in the martial art discipline of sanda. The 26-year-old noted that without the support and guidance of his parents and his uncle, he would not be the champion he is today. 

This issue, we give thanks to our NSmen as we reflect on how far we've come in 53 years as a nation and how important national service is to the defence of our country. This year, SAFRA has introduced a series of "We Thank NSmen" initiatives, including art sessions for preschool children to learn about NS and give cards of appreciation to their NSman fathers; a competition to design GIFs that pay tribute to NSmen; a neon edition of the SAFRA Sprint Kids competition; and special SAF Day Deals offered by SAFRA and more than 110 partnering merchants. Two personalities whom we feature this issue, ShopBack co-founder Joel Leong and SAFRA Management Committee member Andy Tan, share their respective philosophies in business and in volunteering. For Joel, his commando training during NS laid the foundation for him to be unwavering in his pursuit of excellence in the field of e-commerce; for Andy, his passion for volunteering still burns strongly after nearly 15 years as a SAFRA volunteer, and he is proud to be leading the development committee that's responsible for the seventh and newest SAFRA club in Choa Chu Kang, expected to be fully operational by 2022.

This issue, we consider how important family is to NSmen as they do their part for the defence of our country. Recognising this, SAFRA has always offered fine amenities and fun platforms for NSmen and their families to spend quality time together. In recent months, SAFRA clubs and partner merchants have helped NSmen to celebrate Mother's Day in style, while SAFRA's Family Day Out events have been great for bonding outside of the home. Two personalities whom we feature this issue, the former national sprinter Calvin Kang and SAFRA Community Services Club volunteer Victor Lo, both talk about how family have influenced their respective paths. For Calvin, his family has long supported his sporting career and, now, his foray into entrepreneurship; for Victor, it was his mother who inspired him to volunteer and bring a little cheer into the lives of the less fortunate. Then there's DJs Jeremy and Jia Ming, who both share about their experiences as devoted dads, and how they are committed to active fatherhood and being there for their respective families. There are all these stories, and more, as we also look ahead to the SAFRA Membership Grand Draw, which offers members more chances to win attractive prizes as they spend more time creating great memories with SAFRA!

This issue, we look at acts of kindness, such as how SAFRA supported a charity run initiative by hosting participants at its EnergyOne gyms at the start of 2018, or how The Teng Ensemble, co-founded by our feature personality, cellist Gerald Teo, is also actively working to give back to society. A group that brings together elements of East and West in its music, the Teng Ensemble offers scholarships to students with limited financial means, and also conducts free performances at care homes, dialysis centres, hospitals and hospices. In keeping with this theme, we also have our Savvy article that shows how you, if you've always wanted to give back, but didn't know how, can get started. Apart from promoting kindness and giving back, SAFRA also values the importance of family. Hence, it's continuing to organise fun activites to offer NSmen and their families more opportunities to spend quality time together. This includes Family Day Out events, such as the one in March at Gardens by the Bay, with more to come later this year, as well as the upcoming SAFRA Singapore Bay Run and Army Half Marathon, and the many exciting activities planned at SAFRA clubs to mark the upcoming men's football World Cup. 

This issue, we consider the culture of good service that is apparent at local startup Aftershock, which makes customised personal computers for users with high-powered needs. Twin brothers and co-founders Joe and Marcus Wee emphasised that memorable service was one key factor for their multi-million-dollar company's success. In the same vein, SAFRA staff also go out of their way to deliver good service to the visitors to the six SAFRA clubs islandwide. In fact, a record number of them were recognised by the Excellent Service Awards organised by the Singapore Hotel Association. These 39 individuals have done SAFRA proud and also made visitors feel welcome and well cared for. Meanwhile, SAFRA is also furthering its efforts to promote conservation and awareness of green issues, as it observes Earth Hour again this year. You can also find out more about the newest interest group, SAFRA Tech Club, which will cater to fans of games and gadgets.

This issue, Ninja Van co-founder and chief executive officer Lai Chang Wen, once named one of "30 under 30" young entrepreneurs to watch in Asia by Forbes magazine, shares his philosophies for life and success in business. We also share some of the exciting findings of the 44th SAFRA Annual General Meeting, such as the strong growth in SAFRA membership and club visitation, as well as increased participation in SAFRA-organised events. In Travel, we highlight three must-visit destinations for 2018, including one familiar to fans of the popular series Game of Thrones - Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, our Food section showcases four fresh and trendy new eateries in Singapore.
