This issue’s main feature highlights key events taking place during the 12th edition of Singapore Maritime Week (SMW), which is held in Singapore in April. To this end, the Feature article showcases MPA’s multi-pronged digitalisation approach while Port & Starboard highlights Portcast’s software, which uses machine-learning algorithms to predict vessel utilisation dynamically. Also read about the American Bureau of Shipping, which has established the ABS Global Simulation Center, the society’s global Center of Excellence for Modelling and Simulation. Sustainability is a key concern for the Singapore maritime industry, and MPA is committed to making Maritime Singapore a centre of best practices to protect and sustain the marine environment. The Feature article examines a few of MPA's sustainability initiatives, including Tuas Port and LNG bunkering. Company Spotlight showcases the efforts of Tian San Shipping, which aims to combat plastic pollution in the marine environment. Maritime Services highlights the work carried out by the Baltic Exchange, which has been benchmarking the prices of seagoing vessels and cargoes since the mid-1980s. Gain an insight into Mr Andreas Sohmen-Pao’s views in Personality, and hear from industry experts on the topic of decarbonisation in Community Talk.

Safety is of utmost concern to all of us in the maritime industry, and this took on an added dimension with the arrival of the Coronavirus Disease 2019. The feature article examines how technology can empower safety, while Port & Starboard delves into how artificial intelligence and big data can improve safety and efficiency in the seas. Interviews with Ms Sandra Welch, former Chief Operating Officer of Sailors’ Society; and Mr Abhishek Chawla, the Head of Operations at CMA CGM Asia and Chief Operations Officer at APL further underscore the importance of safety. Entrepreneurs took the limelight in Technology, where the winners of the Smart Port Challenge 2019 were featured. Capt Peng Chu Xing from Pacific International Lines shares the company’s safety-first culture, while industry experts give their take on IMO 2020 Fuel Oil Sulphur Limit in Community Talk.

This edition of Singapore Nautilus looks at the issue of gender diversity in Maritime Singapore and the important role that women play. The feature article shares views from women in various capacities, including Ms Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Ms Lim Ying Ying, Cargill Ocean Transportation Asia-Pacific Lead, and Ms Irene Ng Yu Si, Executive Electrical Engineer, PSA. Kicking off on April 6, the annual Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) saw nine exciting days of industry events, networking receptions and public outreach activities attended by more than 50,000 participants from over 30 countries. The feature article shares highlights from during SMW, including the 13th Singapore Maritime Lecture with Minister for Trade and Industry Mr Chan Chun Sing giving the keynote address, SMW Opening Ceremony and Exhibition, International Maritime Awards & Reception, Sea Asia, and the Singapore Maritime Technology Conference. Pacific Carriers Limited shares how they embrace new disruptive technologies to build an agile workforce, while DNV GL explains how their continued investment in research and collaborative innovation helps companies advance the safety and sustainability aspects of their operations.

Singapore commemorates its bicentennial in 2019, and this issue focuses on the nation’s maritime journey from the past to the present, with an eye to the future. The feature story highlights Singapore’s development from a trading post in the 14th century to a global maritime hub, as well as efforts by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to help Singapore remain a leading and vital node in the global maritime network. In keeping with the theme, the Commentary section saw David Chin, former Executive Director of the Singapore Maritime Foundation sharing three areas of the maritime industry that have seen significant improvements through the years. The issue also included COSCO SHIPPING (South East Asia)’s President Gu Jingsong expounding on the factors that make Singapore an attractive regional headquarters as well as Shipowners’ Club’s Singapore branch Chief Executive David Heaselden imparting his thoughts on the club’s role in providing protection and indemnity for its members.

This issue of Singapore Nautilus takes a look at how the shipping industry is prepared for growth despite world-wide challenges. The feature story rounds up the highlights of Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) — the 2018 edition of the region’s premier maritime convention saw 34 events spread across nine impactful days. We attended one key event of SMW 2018, the Maritime Cyber Security Seminar, and share the panellists’ views in a Q&A format in the Community Talk section. Company Spotlight falls on the Wilhelmsen Group, a global player in the maritime industry. Its Chief Digital Officer shares how it is embracing digital technologies to resolve big issues. The spotlight was shone on INTTRA's Asia Technology Summit, where topics such as blockchain technology and the Internet of Things were discussed. This issue also explores the Singapore-based e-marketplace MOSCORD, which simplifies the procurement process for the maritime sector. 

As maritime companies face an uncertain global climate with protectionist trends in trade, Soren Skou, CEO of Maersk, explains how seamless, digital end-to-end solutions can lower the barriers to trade. And Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC) emphasises the need for multilateral sharing of information to combat piracy and sea robbery. 

This issue of Singapore Nautilus features the International Maritime Centre (IMC) 2030 Advisory Committee's vision for Maritime Singapore's next phase of growth, and its strategies for bringing this vision into reality. It also discusses why development in the sector needs to occur in a sustainable manner in order for the broader community to benefit from this plan in the long term.

This issue of SIngapore Nautilus spotlights key developments within the bunkering industry. As the world's top bunkering port, Singapore has always taken the lead in improving standards within the industry.
