This fabulous pink issue is inspired by the flamboyant flamingos of South
Africa! From their beautiful pink feathers that they proudly show off, to

I think that we can all learn a lot from flamingos. Flamingos can live and thrive in challenging environments, where water is polluted or so salty that other creatures cannot survive. So, no matter what life throws at you, always remember to stand tall and believe in yourself! You can do it. And, just like flamingos are proud of their bright and colourful feathers, don't be afraid to show off the parts of yourself that you love and make you feel unique! Wow, what an awesome and jam-packed issue we have waiting for you. This
issue's theme is all about chameleons – those unique, crafty and colour-changing
wonders found in the most well-hidden places! I loved learning all about the
anatomy of chameleons and how they use different parts of their body to hunt,
hide and thrive in the wild.
Chameleons also have important lessons to teach us. Just like them, we can
a􀁒apt to our surrou􀁜􀁒i􀁜gs a􀁜􀁒 a􀁜y situatio􀁜 􀁥e 􀀉 􀁜􀁒 oursel􀁤es i􀁜􀀜 􀀱hameleo􀁜s
are also patient. They rely on their specially adapted skills and wait for the
perfect moment to make their move. This is part of what makes them so hard to
see, and helps keep them safe from predators in the wild. Practicing patience is
not always easy, but slowing down is important for us to remember.
Lastly, and most importantly, each of us is wonderfully unique! We should always
remember to let the colourful parts of our personalities shine for the world to
see – and to delight in seeing the cool colours of others too.

Welcome to the first issue of 2022! New years are the perfect time for fresh
starts and new beginnings. For some of us, that might mean trying some new
things, starting at a new school, or learning some new skills. While some new
beginnings are exciting and fun, others can be a bit more stressful!
During stressful times, it's important to remember to focus on yourself and
not on the changing world around you. One of the best ways to do that is to
step outside, spend some time with your loved ones, or just spend some time
alone with a Supernova magazine.
In this issue, you call chill out with some of the giant animals that lived
thousands of years ago during the Ice Age, discover all kinds of interesting
creepy crawlies, and soak away your stress with the hilarious history of
bathing. Just like always, Supernova is by your side through it all.

Wow, what a busy and jam-packed year it has been! Our Supernova team has achieved
so many great things – like publishing our 55th magazine – and celebrated many
wonderful milestones – like Supernova’s 10th birthday!
When the days and weeks get so busy, it’s hard to take a moment to look back and
appreciate all of the great things that you have achieved. But, it’s super important!
Not only will it motivate you to keep succeeding, but it reminds you to be proud of
yourself. Being proud of yourself can help you feel content and grateful, and usually
makes you good at motivating others.
We know this new issue of Supernova is sure to keep you entertained for hours on
end during the holiday period. How could it not, when there are South African biomes
to explore, extravagant fashion to gaze at, new technology to ponder and codes to
crack? Not to mention, learning more about sport physiotherapy, uncovering the
hidden history of our favourite sports, and practicing mindfulness with some fun
yoga poses! Don’t forget to send us some photos of you enjoying your Supernova

Welcome to our 55th issue and the beginning of Volume 10! Our Supernova team is so excited to bring to life all of our new ideas, stories and creations for you to enjoy! This issue also marks our 10th year of publishing Supernova... so ‘Happy Birthday’ to us! Our founder, Benoit, created the magazine in 2011 with a spectacular vision of creating eye-opening content for the curious kids of South Africa to enjoy. Within the magazine, we’ve travelled far and wide across the globe (and across South Africa!), learnt about many awesome animal species, created some mind-boggling crafts, been in touch with different cultures, and learnt about worlds beyond our planet – just to name a few. So far, Supernova has been enjoyed by over 44 000 people! Over the last 10 years, it has been incredible to see our magazine grow, change and evolve into what it is today. This definitely wouldn't be possible without the awesome team of creatives that have left bits of themselves in every issue for you to find. To celebrate the end of the current volume, we decided to go all out and do an ocean themed issue – partly because we’re dreaming of going to the beach for a holiday after lockdown is over! You can join Ant as she takes a stroll along the gorgeous South African shores to search for spectacular shells and the animals that live inside them. From mussels to oysters, and abalones to conchs, there’s so much to learn about the tiny animals that call these shells home. And, if you find any spectacular shells on your next visit to the beach, follow our Eco Craft steps to turn them into a rad shell necklace that you can wear as a keepsake.

You can read all about some phenomenal floods that have washed over our Earth, learn some fun facts about the French Horn, and read up on all you need to know about becoming a Lightning Pathologist. After that, make sure you buckle up tight as Andy takes us on a visit to the Matsés Village in the Amazon! This fascinating secluded tribe have so many cool traditions that have been preserved over hundreds of years. And, if you’re looking for an excuse to take a tea break, why not cosy up with your favourite cup and read all about the history of tea? From great Chinese emperors and silk tea bags, to illegal tea trade and fashionable tea parties, you won’t be able to put it down!

Get ready to join us as we travel to distant lands, build awesome crafts and solve the coolest challenges! We have some awesome stories to share with you about creative kids that are giving back to their communities and some extra creepy crawlies that live under the sea . . . And don’t forget to check out all of the new discoveries that were found in 2020! From new local spiders and distant planets, to frozen dragons and brand-new islands, you won’t want to miss out. This issue is also jam-packed with amazing facts about your favourite African animals – baby style! You’ll learn all about how pangolin moms keep their pups safe, how much baby elephants weigh when they are born, and how tiny crocodiles get back to the water after hatching! All of these amazing occurrences in nature form part of the way adult animals look after their babies so that they can grow up big and strong. After that, put your DIY skills to the test and create your very own animal piñata, filled up with your favourite sweets! 

This issue of Supernova features immersive articles on oil spills, conservation biology, and even a hiking trail bucket list to help you explore the best trails in South Africa. You’ll read all about interesting technology in our ‘5G: Fact or Fiction’ article, and get some ideas for your next extreme holiday – maybe strand yourself on a desert island or surf down an active volcano? You’ll take a trip to the Gyeongbokgung Palace in South Korea. There is also an interview with the only species of banana left on earth. Don’t forget to discover what your friends can’t do without on a holiday!

Put on a fresh pair of glasses, so to speak, and looking at the people and places around me that I sometimes forget to see… I am surrounded by a city of green and warm summer air, and special people, whose names I may not know, but from whom I always get a smile. In this issue, we take a stroll through some of SA’s major cities to feel the unique heartbeat of every place. It is true that ‘a place is only as good as its people’. A celebration of our urban sprawls, to me, is also a celebration of our people. But as a society we have to face some hard truths. Ant visits Australia to report on the bushfires that have ravaged the country and saddened the world. The Australian people have lost so much in this devastating tragedy, including much of their natural environment and its unique species. This year let’s resolve to be responsible citizens of the earth who act against climate change and take care of our environment and its most special gift, its biodiversity.

As the year runs its last lap to the finish line, we look back at the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. The world celebrated humans’ capacity to achieve great things this year, and it made us proud earthlings. Not to mention, South Africa won the Rugby World Cup! It also made us think about what’s next… technology is growing almost daily. We have moved from moon landings to colonies on Mars, while spectral imaging is redefining how we see colour. It’s so fast that humans are almost racing to catch up to the changing ways of the world. At SN we celebrate hard work and achievement, but once in a while we like to slow down, take a whiff of fresh, bushveld air and remind ourselves of the important things, like getting back in touch with nature. If you’re dreaming of a bushveld excursion, then read on as Ant takes us to the Kruger National Park. We also respect nature as it is a force of great power that can heal and restore itself when we leave our dirty footprints behind. Even the Berlin Wall has something to say about that!

In this issue, we introduce more interviews (with a twist!), we catch up with evolving technologies, and we give some of the old favourites a fresh feel. This might also be the cutest issue ever, as you can't help but say "Aaawww!" when you see those big-eyed bushbabies. So too so we marvel at natures's scary volcanoes. At the same time, we can't help but see yellow everywhere, as the flowers are blooming and spring is on its way. Celebrate the seasons with your mag in hand. Maybe take a road trip to far-off places with odd and interesting names, or just out your feet up and read your SN.

Leaders make difficult decisions for others, do what’s right, and act in a way that’s best for all. It’s not easy being a leader, but each of us can be leaders in our own ways. You can be a leader in your classroom, family, local book club, or aim higher and be a leader like Greta Thunberg. If you aim to make the world a better place, that makes you a leader! Read about Lions and how their hierarchy works, or find out what your DNA could have to do with your leadership abilities. Learn about previous leaders and their opinions about the future or simply learn some interesting facts about world leaders past and present.

There’s a coming-of-age here at Supernova with this issue. the beginning of something new and exciting. Just like the life-cycle of a frog, many strange and confusing things need to happen before there’s a perfectly formed adult frog. Even history and human development goes through cycles: take a look at the history of cars, and reflect on the electrifying future! Find out how Frida Kahla struggled to overcome many personal challenges to become a wonderful artist, and explore the myths and stories we’ve passed down over the generations to make sense of the world around us.

This issue of Supernova is about all things big and small, fierce and fragile and weird and wonderful. Go back in time and imagine seeing a sloth the size of a house. Or a delicate flower that stems from a 100 million years ago. Turn the clock forward and learn how humankind has learnt to measure and adapt with the scientific method or how certain world leaders have completely lost their marbles. It seems so strange that all these things play out on the same small blue planet.

Welcome to the new volume of Supernova! We have taken a step back and for a fresh perspective on your favourite kids’ magazine. It’s incredible how looking at something from a new view gives you so many fresh ideas. We have kept all of the favourites and updated some parts to make the mag even more fun-filled and fantastic. There are even whole new sections called The Big Picture (p.2) and Writing Whiz (p.13).

All the short ‘n crunchy articles are now in the first half of the magazine. Check out Morse Code (p.20) and The Seven Summits (p.22). The longer features start from page 26.

This issue’s feature animal is the southern ground-hornbill. Have you ever spotted one in the wild? If you have, you’re quite lucky because it’s quite a rare find. Find out more about it in Ant’s Eco Adventures (p.26).

Sometimes life can get us a little down. So much of our planet’s beautiful nature is fading away. We’re burning fuel faster than we can make it or clean up the mess it leaves behind. So many species are going extinct and global warming feels like a ticking time bomb!

We say no! This is not the Supernova state of mind. We won’t let all the bad news in the world get us down. There are opportunities around every corner. For instance, learn what can be done to help save the otters in Ant’s Eco Adventures (p.12). Find out how renewable energies work and how it’s the future of clean energy supply (p.18). Remember to have lots of fun as you read this issue. It’s easy to be a responsible human if you know lots about the world and if you have a positive outlook on life.


Our main feature for this issue contains some super hairy, eight-legged, four-eyed little creatures. You guessed it, SPIDERS! Knowing more about spiders and another arachnids can make your fear turn into fascination.
