“SHOW day,” announced Adam in his hammiest West Country accent as we set out for the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show – a must in the North Dorset summer calendar.
This annual extravaganza takes place next door to the South and West Wilts hunt kennels, the scene of many happy memories, and we peered in as we drove past, taking in the familiar red-brick cottages. The last time we went to the show I was pushing Alec – now a teenager – in his buggy from our miniscule cottage on the edge of the village.
“We had some great mornings autumn hunting up these hedgerows,” Adam informed the children as we parked in the field opposite the showground, but Jack was distracted.
