Changes to FEI athlete rep voting rights have sparked growing discontent due to the ‘elite’ electorate
THERE is growing discontent that FEI rider voting rights are now limited to an elite 1,400 riders worldwide, compared with 18,000 at the inaugural athlete elections in 2014.
This year sees the second election for rider representatives on the FEI sports committees.
A new rule limiting voting to competitors in one of the past two Olympic Games or World Championships (WEG) was passed at the FEI general assembly last November, proposed by the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC). But eventers and dressage riders became aware of it only last month (February,) after the FEI listed eligible candidates to stand and vote under the new system.
