Equine charities have backed parliament’s call for prison terms to be longer for those who are cruel to animals.
EQUINE charities are backing the tougher sentences that look to be on the cards for animal abusers.
MPs agreed maximum prison terms for abuse should increase from six months to five years.
The motion was proposed as part of a two-hour debate in the House of Commons on 30 March.
“We need action now. We are a nation that loves animals, but unfortunately there are people who do not, and they must be dealt with strongly,” MP Neil Parish said. He also called for more research into possible progress from abusing animals to abusing people, as indicated by previous studies.

Rider Denies Doping After Team Loses Olympic Placing - Tine Magnus and the Belgian team said they do not know the source of the drug that caused the positive test
Olympic eventer Tine Magnus has denied ever doping after her Paris ride Dia Van Het Lichterveld Z gave a positive test at the Games. This means the Belgian team, which came fourth, has been disqualified. On 4 September, the FEI said the 10-year-old mare, owned by Kris van Vaerenbergh, tested positive for trazodone, which is listed as an antidepressant on the FEI's prohibited substances list.
